Jesus Conversation with a Centurions

Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10; Mark 15:38-30; Matthew 27:65-66; 28:11-15

On this Resurrection Sunday I want to listen Jesus’ conversation with one
centurion. Grasp the conclusion of a centurion who witnessed the trial and lead
the execution of Jesus and the reaction of the guards at the tomb.

Certain Centurion Matthew 8:5-13; Luke 7:1-10
Conversation accounts slight different. It is clear the centurion had heard of
Jesus, possibly seen Jesus heal and certainly understood Jesus loved people.
Completely unusual attitude toward his slave/servant. Clearly a religious man.
This centurion was credited with helping get the synagogue built in Cameraperson.
Character of the centurion: Man of honor who understood authority and a man
of faith: He acknowledged Jesus’ authority, trusted, and confirmed it. Matthew
8:13 a far-reaching statement.

Convinced Centurion: Mark 15:38-39

This centurion declared: “Truly, this was the Son of God.” Was it what he
witnessed and experienced on that Friday? 1. Watched as Pilate tried to free
Jesus. 2. He was present when Jesus was beaten. 3. He heard mocking as Jesus
carried his cross. 4. He may have order Simon to carry Jesus’ cross. 5 He ordered
the nails to be driven. 6. He expected Jesus to curse, blame and make plea but
he heard Jesus pray and pardon. 7. He had a front row seat. 8. He was a witness
of the darkness at noon and felt the earthquake when Jesus last spoke. He
observed Jesus’ disposition and demeanor during his horrible death. The truth
was oblivious; A problem with his conclusion: The word “was” that was Friday’s
last word, but not the final word of Sunday!

Concerned tomb guards. Matthew 27:65-66; 28:11-15

Pilate’s concession to Jewish leaders: Jesus said he would rise in three days.
Pilate curt response “You have a guard, go make it secure.” Plot to cover up the
empty tomb. Problems was Jesus appearing to the disciples, hundreds of people,
speaking to Mary Mandala. Payment to be quite about the events of Sunday.
At the Cross, Jesus completely identified with humanity. All sin was placed upon
Him who had never experienced sin. Jesus was separated from the Father
because of sin. The darkness was more than a dimming of the sun. It was the
Father and Son no longer being one. Jesus was paying fully sin’s debt. God’s plan
for reclaiming believers was complete. Friday’s word was not the final word
because Sunday had come! The final word comes on Sunday: He is Risen!
